PEGASUS D WIN TOP OF DIVISION FOUR CLASH
Pegasus D gained revenge for their earlier season defeat by CRGS A beating
them 8-2 and in the process jumped four places to the top of the Colchester
& District Table Tennis Division Four. Keith Clubb led the way for
the Marks Tey team with his fifth straight maximum maintaining his one
hundred percent record. Clubb was well supported by James Swabey and Stan
Flint who won two apiece as their team won all five games that went to
five sets including the doubles. Alex Hadcock won the two for CRGS who
are third making amends with a 10-0 whitewash against Lawford D as Phil
Lawson made a successful debut for the school team. League leaders Pegasus
D had another 8-2 win against promotion rivals St Mary’s E, Sandy
Issac also winning three at her first attempt in fine attacking style.
Lawford C lost their lead following two poor performances, the first a
7-3 defeat by H20 Rowhedge H’s rising stars with Mark Smith and
Andrew Harvey both taking excellent maximums in the process beating Andrea
Alleyne in five sets. They were then held to a 5-5 by the Grammar School’s
B team which could have been worse had not CRGS’s Daniel Malcolm
not been ineligible having won his quota of seven wins for the ‘A’
team meaning he can no longer play for the lower side. Harvey was joined
by Jess Page in winning his three this time for the ‘G’ team
a result that mean he can no longer represent the ‘H’ team.
Sandy Haffenden was Lawford D’s only winner beating Daryl Lott 13-11
in the fifth end after Lott had beaten Maggie Earle 14-12 in the final
set earlier. To round off his night of five set encounters Lott won his
last match against Linda Ablett 11-7 to complete a 9-1 win as Lawford
remain bottom. Gt Horkesley E beat their ‘B’ team 8-2 with
Chris Jones and Denise Thompson undefeated but the two points kept Horkesley
F off the bottom.
Clairmont A had mixed fortunes in Division Three with two 6-4 results
one in their favour the other against. The win was against Gt Horkesley
D with Dan Farrow winning his three for the losers and the defeat against
Dedham B when Clairmont fielded only two players and no one was unbeaten.
Pegasus C move up to joint fourth after two big wins 9-1 against Tollesbury
B and 8-2 at H20 Rowhedge F with Toby Turner starring in both with six
good wins. Pegasus B and Dedham B played out a 5-5 draw with George Berry
again winning three.
In Division Two Walton C overcame second placed H20 Rowhedge D 6-4 despite
Fred Button’s best efforts for the village team as he won his three,
the closest a five set deuce match against Colin Dearman playing his last
match for the ‘C’ team as he has won seven playing up and
now must represent the ‘A’ team. Walton followed this up with
a 10-0 trouncing of Lawford A who drop to fourth as the seaside team put
distance between them and the chasing pack with Neil Crook unbeaten in
his first appearance in this division. Third placed St Mary’s C
came through a tough match at Anchor Press in a 6-4 win, Martin Edwards
winning his customary three as he did against fifth placed Gt Horkesley
B in a 7-3 win although Janet Faiers pushed him all the way to five sets.
Wudong Liu played for Horkesley against H20 Rowhedge D and even his best
efforts could not prevent another defeat this time 6-4. H20 Rowhedge E
have games in hand and they brushed aside Tollesbury A, veteran Peter
Giles with a virtuoso performance. Lawford A’s 7-3 win over St Peters
was closer than it looked with half the games going the full distance,
four of them in favour of the home team with Matt Webb winning his three
for Lawford.
