LAWFORD A TOP DIVISION TWO

Second met third in Division Two of the Colchester & District Table Tennis League with Lawford A coming out on top of Gt Horkesley C 7-3. Graham Mortimer led the way, returning from injury winning his three, supported by Mark Nowers who won two and Peter Armes one. Lorrie Austin put up stiff resistance but without star player Wuidong Liu this was a real blow to their promotion aspirations. Walton D are second, three points behind Lawford having played one game less but head Gt Horkesley by five points with two games in hand over them. At the foot of the division Pegasus B did themselves a power of good beating H20 Rowhedge D 7-3 as Toby Turner, Mike Sant and Tony Eversden all won a brace. Turner just missed out on his maximum going down 11-9 in the fifth end to Pete Simmonds for whom this was surprisingly his only win. H20 Rowhedge I took advantage of their club mate’s loss, drawing level with them, beating bottom team St Peters 8-2 with Roger Warren winning the battle of ex-Anchor Press teammates against Brian Spellor who won his other two singles for Rowhedge. Despite Clairmont’s 6-4 defeat to Lawford they remain just outside the relegation zone as Pegasus A drop into that unenviable position. Paul Tracy secured his third straight maximum in a row but as with the last, was unfortunately again, on the losing side!

Previously unbeaten Walton E head Division Three and with two of the top players in the Division squaring up it was Walton’s James Denyer that beat George Berry in four sets. However, a good team effort saw Dedham inflict a first defeat for the seaside team with Andy Franklin winning two and Marjorie Culham a vital one, a marathon 12-10, 8-11, 14-12, 11-13, 13-11 win over Ferdie Rodriguez! Second placed Tollesbury A closed the gap to four points, courtesy of a 9-1 hammering of Pegasus D with Paul Freeman and Roger Clarke unbeaten. Tollesbury B move up to third having beaten H20 Rowhedge E 8-2, Mark Shorney completing his first maximum. Gt Horkesley D are struggling and were it not for Phil Wolski’s best efforts, they would probably be bottom but his triple could still not stop St Mary’s B winning 7-3.

University of Essex take over at the top of Division Four for the first time following the battle of the colleges, with an win 8-2 over CRGS. Carlo Yeung won three on debut as did the dependable Rob Bozier who remains unbeaten for the season.

There were two 7-3 wins in Division four, St Mary’s C beat Pegasus E and H20 Rowhedge H accounted for Gt Horkesley E. Paul Weston for St Mary’s and Jimin and Jane Li both for Rowhedge were all undefeated.

One solitary result in Division One saw second from bottom Walton C double the points gap over bottom team Gt Horkesley B with a 6-4 win. Mark Lewis was unlucky to end up on the losing side, winning his three while Walton’s Paul Meikle and Mark Gale won two each and a crucial doubles, 13-11 in the final end!

Colchester League players are once again reminded that entry’s for the closed tournament in March are due in by the end of this month.
