& Views from the Colchester Table Tennis League 26th Jan 2010 The Rowhedge Table Tennis Club are fighting to retain their Division One title on two fronts and sent out clear warnings to title rivals with two equally significant results. The ‘A’ team are the reigning champions and they warmed up for their match this week with second placed St Mary’s A with two 10-0 whitewashes the first Walton B and the other Rayne A. Steve Joslin, Michael Andrews and Antony Greenwood were all unbeaten in both, Rayne’s Alistair Hill closest to a win surrendering a two set lead, losing to Joslin 11-2, 11-6, 4-11, 7-11, 9-11. That opens the gap at the top to twenty-six points, having played two more than second placed St Mary’s A. Greg Green tops the individual averages in the Division as team mate Gary Young suffered a rare defeat to John Patrick in four sets for H20 Rowhedge C. St Mary’s ran out 7-3 winners, with Green winning three and Patrick two. H20 Rowhedge C and Rayne both had to settle for a 5-5 draw when the two met, Jon Hill unbeaten for the Braintree side. Walton B recovered when beating Gt Horkesley B 9-1 to move them into fifth spot. Neil Crook and John Rice were unbeaten for the seaside team, with Michael Rostoft winning the village team’s sole point. Since Andrew Mudie has joined H20 Rowhedge B they are undefeated in five games and closed the gap between them and third placed Gt Horkesley A to just three points by beating them 6-4. Mudie was the star player winning his three, beating Aimee Sparkes as she lost her unbeaten record in the process. In Division Two Lawford A extended their lead to ten points albeit Walton D have played two games less. Mark Nowers joined Graham Mortimer unbeaten this week as their team avenged their first half defeat to their ‘B’ team, winning 7-3. H20 Rowhedge I go third following a 6-4 defeat of Pegasus B, Alan Burgess again winning his three. Rowhedge’s D team followed their ‘I’ team into fourth courtesy of a 5-5 draw with Clairmont who join Pegasus B on forty-eight points. Paul Tracey reeled off his fourth straight maximum, all of which have failed to see his team win! The bottom two met and thanks to Steve Noble’s untroubled maximum for Pegasus A they are just one point behind the aforementioned two teams, with two games in hand. Tollesbury A’s 10-0 hammering of H20 Rowhedge E sees them go joint top of Division Three. Paul Freeman, John Matthews and Roger Clarke were their successful trio whilst Walton E won they dropped four points to Pegasus C. Thirteen year-old James Denyer again won three, taking his season’s tally to twenty-four without defeat. Tollesbury B remain third winning a close match with St Mary’s B 6-4 mainly due John Moore’s return to form which included a fine win over John Sorrell in four sets. H20 Rowhedge F drew at Pegasus D with no player undefeated, Colin Powell coming closest, going down to Nigel Parmenter in five sets in his only defeat. In Division Four University of Essex have taken over the top spot as they beat Gt Horkesley E 7-3. Peerapat Jatukannyaprateep and Chester Chung were unbeaten, both winning their last games 11-9 in the final end! CRGS A are third as they beat Pegasus E 9-1 and Lawford C lost 7-3 at St Mary’s C. Paul Weston and Neil Storey both completed maximums for the West Bergholt team. This is the final reminder for Colchester League players to enter the
closed tournament.
