ALL ROWHEDGE CUP FINAL

The Rowhedge club will provide both finalists for this season’s Kiltie Cup Final. This season’s league champions, H20 Rowhedge A beat St Mary’s A 7-2 thanks mainly to Antony Greenwood’s unbeaten performance in both singles and doubles. Gary Young achieved a consolation win over Colchester Men’s singles champion Steve Joslin but the match was already lost by then. In the other semi-final H20 Rowhedge B remain unbeaten in the competition, defeating Gt Horkesley A by the same score line. David Moss continued his good late season form along with Andrew Mudie steering their team home to make it an all Rowhedge final.

In the Intermediate Cup Lawford A celebrated promotion to Division One with a 5-2 victory over Gt Horkesley C with veteran Graham Mortimer steering his team home, undefeated.

University of Essex had a comfortable 7-2 success over St Mary’s C in the first Minor Cup semi-final with Division Four singles finalists Mitchell Davidson and Rob Bozier going through the evening untroubled.

In the pick of the Handicap Cup quarter-finals Walton D came back from 3-1 down to beat H20 Rowhedge F 5-4. No fewer than five games went the full five set distance, highlight of which was a match winning final set 27-25 doubles win for John Hobson and Annabelle Rodriguez over Colin Powell and David Sacker. This turned the match as Walton won the next two games and sealed the win as Martin Edwards joined Hobson overcame a ten point handicap to win 21-18, 22-20. Alice Rudge played a major role for H20 Rowhedge A in their 7-2 win over Gt Horkesley C as they bid to pull off the ‘treble’. Dedham A whitewashed Pegasus C courtesy of Andy Franklin, Dale Everett and Steve Gibson all remaining unbeaten. In the last quarter final favourites, University of Essex breezed past H20 Rowhedge D 6-0 with Davidson and Bozier joined by Chester Chung in the win.

Back in the League Walton E wrapped up the Division Three title - without playing as Tollesbury A, needing nine points to overhaul them could only manage eight against Pegasus C. Roger Clark and Paul Freeman completed excellent seasons winning three apiece as their team return to Division Two. The same scenario applied to the University of Essex who were crowned Division Four champions when H20 Rowhedge G dropped three points to Colchester Royal Grammar School . Father and son Mark and Sam Burrows did their bit, both winning three which leaves their team needing seven more points to secure promotion in their match against bottom club Gt Horkesley E. This is a feat they should complete as Horkesley are without a win and indeed they deserve having led the division for the majority of the season.

In Division Two, two 7-3 wins for H20 Rowhedge I and Walton D keeps the final promotion issue alive with Walton requiring four points to overhaul Rowhedge and a further five more if they are to win the title. John Hobson and Philippe Rodriguez as well as Alan Burgess and Dave Harrison were all undefeated in both matches. Gt Horkesley A moved into second place in Division One following three wins, the last an impressive 9-1 win over rivals St Mary’s A 9-1.
